Sao Paulo remains a city contradictions and oppositions.  While political and economic analysis provide much understanding of the city, it is ultimately the physiognomy of the city that is far more revealing and foregrounds the urgency of marginalization and impoverishment.  The three visited spaces of economic production, daily life, and knowledge embody different material realities that indicate the underlying power structures which shape and define these spaces.  While the World Trade Center, Parque Real, and the University of Sao Paulo are all products of capitalist modes of production they are treated indifferently.  The specificity of place and materiality are not addressed by the politics of the city.
