CIMAM 2005 Annual Conference
“Museums:Intersections in a Global Scene”

CIMAM's Annual Conference(International Committee of ICOM for Museums and Collections of Modern Art) will be held November 21-22, 2005, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This meeting will gather experts in museum and curatorial studies to discuss topics such as the role of the art museum, the erosion of the public sphere, the confusion between ownership and custody, the right to history, virtuosity and production, and the geopolitics of knowledge.

The Permanent Forum will be at the event to provide reports of all the sessions.

With a 2-day format, CIMAM 2005 Annual Conference “Museums: Intersections in a Global Scene” will comprise 4 lectures/sessions of 45 minutes, each followed by a panel featuring 3 or 4 discussion leaders engaging in a 45 minute debate, and an hour of open ended discussion for attendees to share ideas and work out conclusions. This layout is intended to elicit both in-depth thinking and critical responses on topics that we consider central in museum and art practice today, including the role of the art museum, the erosion of the public sphere, the confusion between ownership and custody, the right to history, virtuosity and production, and the geopolitics of knowledge.

• Ursula Biemann, artist and curator.
•    Roger M. Buergel, exhibition organizer and author, artistic director to Documenta 12.
•    Lynne Cooke, curator, Dia Art Foundation, New York.
•    Robert Fleck, director, Deichtorhallen, Hamburg.
•    Walter Grasskamp, art critic and professor of His­to­ry of Art, Aca­de­my of Fine Arts, Munich.
• Brian Holmes, cultural theorist, art critic, and activist
•    Ariel Jiménez, curator, Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Collection, Caracas
• Vasif Kortun, director, Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul.
• Maurizio Lazzarato, sociologist and philosopher. Co-founder of Multitudes
• Ana Longoni, writer and professor and researcher at the Schools of Philosophy and Letters, and Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Doctor in History of Art (UBA).
• Ivo Mesquita, curator, Pinacoteca do Estado. Professor, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, New York.
•    Walter D. Mignolo, William H. Wannamaker distinguished professor of literature and romance studies; professor of cultural anthropology.
•    Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, curator of Latin American art, Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas, Austin
