The Instituto Tamaulipeco para la Cultura y las Artes (ITCA) of the Government of the State of Tamaulipas, in collaboration with the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes of Mexico, calls on emerging visual artists and curators, both Mexican and foreign, to participate in the Biennial of the Frontiers (Bienal de las Fronteras).

Conceived as a public and participatory platform focusing on the most up-to-date and emerging concepts and expressions of the visual arts, the Biennial of the Frontiers seeks to become a space in which creation, imagination and the analysis and dissemination of contemporary art foster the exploration of the established frontiers of contemporary art practices in Mexico and abroad.

Among its goals, the Biennial aims to build a platform for emerging artists and curators to develop creative and innovative proposals in the field of the visual arts, facilitating their dialogue, exchange and critical discussion of current artistic practices that take into consideration the regional-global relationship, its challenges and opportunities.

The Biennial is hosted by the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Tamaulipas (MACT) and has the valuable support of institutions such as the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City, and the education departments of the Guggenheim Museum and El Museo del Barrio, both in New York. Through these two latter institutions, the Biennial of the Frontiers (Bienal de las Fronteras) will offer a workshop for emerging curators selected for/from the Biennial, who will participate alongside internationally recognized art professionals and intellectuals in September.

The members of the Selection Committee of the Biennial include the visual artist and architect María del Carmen Aguirre Treviño (México), the independent curator and journalist Leonor Amarante (Brazil), the art historian and curator Julia P. Herzberg (USA), the chief curator of the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Guillermo Santamarina (México), and Emiliano Valdés, chief curator of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín, Colombia (Guatemala).

Conceived as an open call, all submissions by both emerging artists and curators should be entered via the website. The deadline for curatorial projects is August 22. Artists who submit their proposals independently must present the pertinent information no later than September 22.

Through its acquisition program, the Biennial of the Frontiers (Bienal de las Fronteras) will fund prizes and build a collection comprised of the most relevant artworks and curatorial projects presented to benefit the Instituto Tamaulipeco para la Cultura y las Artes (ITCA) in Tamaulipas, Mexico.
