No time like the future, een symposium bij de Appel & MDD talks

Het jaar 2021 wordt nu al gekenmerkt door wikken en wegen, vroege vreugde en wederom onzekerheid. Als een lazy king strekt corona zich uit, op een bed met plannen. De veiligheid van bezoekers, makers en personeel staat steeds voorop. Hierdoor moeten we de tentoonstelling, als onderdeel van sonsbeek20→24 opnieuw uitstellen. Niet in de lente maar in de zomer onderzoeken we of bezoekers van de Eusebiuskerk richting de Steile Tuin kunnen wandelen, of van DE.GROEN richting Buitenplaats fietsen, met als doel 37 kunstwerken in binnen- en buitenlucht te ervaren.
Tot die tijd zitten we niet stil, met grote moed verkennen we de online atmosfeer, zetten we zoom op scherp, ontwikkelen we de website, produceren we een app, slaan we praatjes, ontmoeten we elkaar waar we maar willen, en petit comité.Curatorenteam te gast bij de Appel

Onder de titel 𝐻𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑠 verkent de Appel de vele betekenissen van het woord thuis: artistiek directeur Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung schreef een tekst, lead-off track, ingesproken in Douala, als inleiding voor het programma. Daarnaast ontwikkelden co-curatoren Amal Alhaag, Zippora Elders, Krista Jantowski en Aude Christel Mgba een reeks seminars waarbij verschillende noties van thuis, thuisgevoel en ballingschap centraal staan.
"Verregaander dan die praktische veranderingen is dat we werken met een groeiend bewustzijn van de poëzie van het thuis."

Wandelen door een stukje verleden

Zelfs zonder deze editie van sonsbeek toont Arnhem een bijzonder aanbod aan moderne kunstwerken. Doorheen de stad, tot aan Kröller-Müller Museum staan meer dan 40 beelden die ooit door de stad Arnhem of door plaatselijke musea zijn aangekocht, het vormt deel van hun beleid om het tijdelijke initiatief een langer leven toe te kennen, maar het betekent ook inspiratie op een onverwacht moment. Misschien zag je Evolutie of Skies Captured voorheen nog niet, wij zetten ze voor jou met plezier terug op de radar.

MDD Talks: een gesprek met directeur Steven van Teeseling
Door de huidige pandemie zijn vragen rond plaatsgebondenheid en duurzaamheid niet alleen urgent maar ook onvermijdelijk geworden, onderwerpen die directeur Steven van Teeseling nauw aan het hart liggen. Op uitnodiging van Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens en in goed gezelschap van Heidi Ballet (curator Beaufort Triënnale) en Chantal Pattyn (curator Kunstenfestival Watou) sprak hij over de internationale ambities die gelden en de lokale verankering die voorop staat bij sonsbeek20→24.

Volgende week organiseert Decolonial Futures de eerste uitkomst van onze partnerschap! Geïnspireerd door de wens om gezamenlijk te werken aan een dekoloniale toekomst waarin een gelijkwaardige uitwisseling van kennis en perspectieven van studenten kan ontstaan, nodigde de organisatie sonsbeek20→24 uit om gedurende een volledig semester vanuit het curatoriële framework en binnen de context van educatie in te zoomen op arbeid en het sonische.
Het semester opent feestelijk op 9 maart. Shenece Oretha, Sami El-Enany, Sibusiso "General" Nxumalo en Werker Collective vertellen ons hoe hun artistieke praktijk verbanden legt met de onderwerpen die sonsbeek20→24 beslaat. Curator Aude Christel Mgba zal enkele vragen beantwoorden die centraal staan en Simangaliso Sibiya en Phumzile Twala introduceren het programma Decolonial Futures.

2021, three months young and already known as the year of back and forth, early joys and the return of insecurity. Imagining itself the lazy king, Corona reclined onto our bed of plans. Of course, we prioritise the safety of our visitors, makers and staff, which means we have to postpone sonsbeek20→24 once again. It won’t be spring, instead we aim to open in summer when visitors start their walk from the Eusebiuskerk onto the Steile tuin, or ride a bike from DE.GROEN towards Buitenplaats, ultimately experiencing 37 artworks both in- and outdoor.
Rest assured, we’ll move and shake until then. Exploring the online world with courage; apprenticing the zoom-lifestyle, developing the website, producing an app, talking the talk, and meeting where and when we want to; en petit comité.Home is where the music is

Under the title 𝐻𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑖𝑠 and at the invitation of De Appel, the curators of sonsbeek20→24 explore the many meanings of ‘getting home’: artistic director Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung wrote a lead-off track, later recorded in Douala, as an interlude to the programme. Furthermore, co-curators Amal Alhaag, Zippora Elders, Krista Jantowski and Aude Christel Mgba have collectively developed a programme that will dissect and complicate the notion of home. “There is a desire to move art and history beyond alienation effects – towards a sense of joy and belonging in the world, with each other, however near or far we may find ourselves from crib and kin.”

Reminiscing about previous editions

With or without this edition of sonsbeek, Arnhem offers a remarkable selection of modern art. Throughout the city, and up to Kröller-Müller Museum you will find 40 sculptures acquired throughout the years by the city of Arnhem as well as local museums. Part of a policy to offer longer life to sonsbeek’s temporary presence in Arnhem, it inspires people on the daily and in unexpected ways. MDD Talks: a converstation with director Steven van Teeseling
Urgent questions on locality and sustainability have become inevitable in the context of the ongoing pandemic, and are of great importance to director Steven van Teeseling. In a conversation with Heidi Ballet (curator Beaufort Triënnale) and Chantal Pattyn (curator Kunstenfestival Watou) and initiated by Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, he spoke about the ways in which sonsbeek20→24 manifests its international ambitions without ever losing sight of its local embedment. “We’re in a field that is used to shifting, shrinking, growing and seeking alternative scenarios.”
Knowledge is a collective endeavour

Next week Decolonial Futures presents the first outcome of a partnership with sonsbeek20→24! Inspired by the desire to work collectively towards a decolonial future in which an equal exchange of knowledges and perspectives from students arise, the organisation invited sonsbeek to collaborate on the topics of labour and the sonic. Over the course of 2 months the programme looks into traditional forms of African storytelling and the creation and transfer of knowledge via music and songs in various different cultures.
The term opens with an introductory session on March 9! Shenece Oretha, Sami El-Enany, Sibusiso “General" Nxumalo and Werker Collective will present their practices in relation to the themes of sonsbeek20→24, curator Aude Christel Mgba elaborates on questions that are at the heart of its curatorial framework and Simangaliso Sibiya and Phumzile Twala join in to introduce Decolonial Futures.
