How do archives influence social realities? Which strategies can be used to decolonize archives in the digital space? Can archives enable alternative ideas of the future?
The Whole Life. Archives & Imaginaries reflects on archives as places for counter-narratives and illuminates the profound links between archives and society. During the three-day congress, artists and scholars will develop alternative narrative forms and research strategies in experimental formats. They demonstrate how comprehensively archives, as infrastructures of preservation, perpetuate hegemonic thinking. At the same time, we see what methods and practices are necessary in order to make archives usable as a resource for reflecting contemporary questions and for future knowledge production. In the exhibition, artists unfold their own strategies for dealing with archival material in eight installation-based case studies: Assaf Gruber’s docufictional film Transient Witness provides insight into a world-famous art collection from a dog’s perspective. Charlotte Eifler and Clarissa Thieme’s film installation relates digital technologies, witnessing and coming to terms with war trauma in the former Yugoslavia. Tony Cokes extracts fragments from historical reports of explicit violence and makes it possible to experience what this means for the politics of memory today.
The program was conceived in close collaboration with the international Whole Life Academyand its institutional partners. The website wholelife.hkw.de mirrors the research and compiles essays, photographs and videos from the project network in an online repository. Users can connect the material to create dynamic thematic clusters.

Como os arquivos influenciam as realidades sociais? Que estratégias podem ser utilizadas para descolonizar os arquivos no espaço digital? Os arquivos podem possibilitar ideias alternativas de futuro?
A Vida Inteira. Arquivos e Imaginários reflete sobre os arquivos como lugares de contra-narrativas e ilumina os laços profundos entre os arquivos e a sociedade. Durante o congresso de três dias, artistas e acadêmicos desenvolverão formas narrativas alternativas e estratégias de pesquisa em formatos experimentais. Eles demonstram como os arquivos de forma abrangente, como infraestruturas de preservação, perpetuam o pensamento hegemônico. Ao mesmo tempo, vemos quais métodos e práticas são necessários para tornar os arquivos utilizáveis como recurso para refletir questões contemporâneas e para a produção de conhecimento futuro. Na exposição, os artistas desdobram suas próprias estratégias para lidar com material de arquivo em oito estudos de caso baseados em instalações: o filme documental Transient Witness, de Assaf Gruber, fornece informações sobre uma coleção de arte mundialmente famosa da perspectiva de um cão. A instalação cinematográfica de Charlotte Eifler e Clarissa Thieme relaciona tecnologias digitais, testemunhando e aceitando traumas de guerra na ex-Iugoslávia. Tony Cokes extrai fragmentos de relatos históricos de violência explícita e possibilita experimentar o que isso significa para a política da memória hoje.
O programa foi concebido em estreita colaboração com a Whole Life Academy internacional e seus parceiros institucionais. O site wholelife.hkw.de espelha a pesquisa e compila ensaios, fotografias e vídeos da rede do projeto em um repositório online. Os usuários podem conectar o material para criar clusters temáticos dinâmicos.
