Pioneering Civic Engagement: The Vera List Center, 20 Years and Counting

Reena Katz’s intervention during the 20th Anniversary Conference, May 17, 2013. Katz also created a website that highlights, plays, and invites engagement with the VLC online archive.

You know the Vera List Center’s crucial role as an idea incubator and a public forum for art, culture, and politics. Now is the time to show us you care: as we conclude our twentieth-anniversary year, we ask you to support our work.

Twenty years in the making, the Vera List Center is the only university-based institution committed exclusively to leading public research on the intersection between art and politics—the space where new forms of civic engagement must be developed. With 500 events since our founding in 1992, after numerous exhibitions, publications, policy papers, classes, workshops, performances, and fellowships, we hope you will help with our multifaceted investment in and exploration of new roles for the arts and artists in advancing social justice.

In our 20th Anniversary Celebration Year alone, the Vera List Center

  • Curated 28 events, including 3 conferences, with 147 presenters and many thousands of visitors, online or at our spaces at The New School,
  • Held a daylong Anniversary Conference assessing issues at the intersection of art and politics from the past twenty years,
  • Launched a new website with an online archive of events, publications, exhibitions, awards, and projects,
  • Commissioned Paul Ramírez Jonas and Reena Katz to make art works based on the archive,
  • Gave its first Biennial Prize to artist Theaster Gates,
  • Produced a benefit Vera List Limited Edition Print Portfolio with two partner institutions.

What are the critical discussions, rousing debates, artistic risks, and public research that will emerge in 2013–14, or the next twenty years? Please consider giving a tax-deductible contribution to support the VLC’s diverse range of programming. Our future is secured with your generosity and support.
