Symposium nature after nature

Die Trennung von Natur und Kultur ist obsolet. Natur sind wir und alles, was uns umgibt. Natur macht und wird, Natur ist Subjekt und Material zugleich. Natur konstituiert sich nach der Natur permanent neu.
Im Umgang mit transformierten Materialien und Bildern, deren Herkunft und aktiven Wechselwirkungen lassen die Künstler in nature after nature Unterscheidungen zwischen synthetisch und organisch, mensch- und naturgemacht hinter sich. Sie zeigen eine Natur, die jenseits ihrer sinnlichen Erscheinungsformen wirksam ist. Eine Natur, deren vielschichtige Wechselwirkungen Vorstellungen von Raum und Zeit sprengen.
Die Absage an die Trennung von Natur und Kultur wie den universellen Anspruch dieser Kategorien wird auch in aktuellen philosophischen Theorien verhandelt. Das Symposium nature after nature fragt danach, wie Natur in Raum und Zeit, Materialität und Immaterialität neu gedacht werden kann.

Markus Gabriel lehrt Erkenntnistheorie, Philosophie der Neuzeit und der Gegenwart an der Universität Bonn und leitet dort das Internationale Zentrum für Philosophie. Zuletzt erschien von ihm der Beststeller Warum es die Welt nicht gibt (2013).

Iain Hamilton Grant lehrt Philosophie an der University of the West of England in Bristol. Er ist Autor von Philosophies of Nature After Schelling (2006), Idealism. The History of a Philosophy (2011) und Deep Field Ontology (im Erscheinen).

Frédéric Neyrat lehrt Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft an der University of Wisconsin-Madison und ist Redaktionsmitglied der Zeitschrift Multitudes. Er ist Autor von Biopolitique des catastrophes. La politique sur le qui-vive (2008).

Cord Riechelmann ist Biologe und Publizist. Sein Hauptinteresse gilt den Lebensbedingungen von Natur in der Kultur städtischer Lebensräume. Zuletzt erschien von ihm Krähen. Ein Portrait (2013).

Jason Wirth lehrt Philosophie an der Seattle University. Er ist Autor von The Conspiracy of Life. Meditations on Schelling and His Time (2003).

Das Symposium findet im Rahmen der Ausstellung nature after nature statt, die vom 11. Mai bis zum 17. August 2014 im Fridericianum zu sehen ist.

The division of nature and culture is obsolete. Nature is us, and everything that surrounds us. Nature does and becomes, nature is subject and material at the same time. Nature is forever reconstituting itself after nature.
In their approach to transformed materials and images, their origins and interactions, the artists in nature after nature abandon distinctions between synthetic and organic, man-made and natural. They present a nature that impacts beyond its sensory manifestations. A nature whose varied interactions undermine our notions of space and time.
The refusal to distinguish between nature and culture and to accept the claim to universal validity of these categories is also addressed by current philosophical theories. The symposium nature after nature enquires how nature can be considered anew in space and time, materiality and immateriality.

Markus Gabriel is Professor for Epistemology, Modern and Contemporary Philosophy at the University of Bonn and Director of the university’s International Centre for Philosophy. He is author of the bestseller Warum es die Welt nicht gibt (2013).

Iain Hamilton Grant is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of the West of England in Bristol. His publications include Philosophies of Nature After Schelling (2006), Idealism. The History of a Philosophy (2011) and Deep Field Ontology (forthcoming).

Frédéric Neyrat is Lecturer in Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and member of the editorial board of Multitudes. His publications include Biopolitique des catastrophes. La politique sur le qui-vive (2008).
