The Honkan _本館_ main building _ Japanese Gallery

Houses the museum's main display of Japanese art from prehistory to the late 19th century. It has two floors and a basement with a total floorspace of 21,500 m2 (231,000 sq ft). Designed by Jin Watanabe, it is a reinforced-concrete structure in the Imperial Crown Style, having a neoclassical base and Japanese roof. It opened it's doors in 1938.
