The First Paço das Artes International Conference
August 07th to10th 2005
Paço das Artes
São Paulo

A partnership between Paço das Artes and Permanent Forum:

Paço das Artes

Paço das Artes was created in 1970 and is funded by the State Secretariat of Culture of Sao Paulo. It is a multidisciplinary art gallery that promotes culture through exhibitions and publications covering all areas of the visual arts: fine arts, design, multimedia installations – therefore contributing to the critical debate around national and international contemporary arts. Located in the University of Sao Paulo campus, it occupies a total area of 4000m2 split into two levels, with 2000 m2 of gallery space.  Paço das Artes audience is formed by the general public as well as visual artists, architects, art critics, gallerists, collectors, journalists, lecturers and students, making it a catalyst for the contemporary art debate.

Permanent Forum: art museums; between the public and private realms

An initiative by the Goethe Institute, coordinated by Martin Grossman (USP) in partnership with the Consulate General of France in S. Paulo, the British Council and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in S. Paulo, with the support from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation. Permanent Forum is an ongoing project – closing in 2006 - that seeks to promote the collaboration among Brazilian and European museums and cultural institutions.

The Forum aims to create a permanent dialogue around the cultural policies and activities carried out by art museums today and to foster the exchange between professionals working on the fields of museum studies, visual arts and cultural management through a regular programme of live events – talks, roundtables, workshops and seminars – that facilitate the integration of those professionals. Permanent Forum also maintains – with the support of FAPESP and the State Secretariat of Culture - an online resource for ongoing discussions, communications, archive and promotion of the project both internationally and in the Brazilian context.

SUPPORT:  Canal Contemporâneo

Canal Contemporâneo (Contemporary Channel) was created in December, 2000, as part of a book project. From the pioneer use of electronic invitations for art events, the project started to fulfill a growing demand for communication within the Brazilian art world.  After four years, it became an important source concerning Brazilian contemporary art, both locally and abroad: it is a collective and vibrant memory of a community that uses it as a tool for information, knowledge, research and work.
